Case Study: The Use of Multi-Sensory Equipment with Disabled Learners (Barnsley College)

Learner Needs
One group of learners at Barnsley College have severe learning difficulties and have long term goals of achieving greater independence.
The learning environment has a serious impact on the learning that takes place, and the traditional quiet, plainly lit classroom, is itself a barrier to learning. Multi-sensory equipment - using lights, sound and tactile equipment - is having a positive effect on students here, creating great enthusiasm for learning.

Technology

One tutor had used basic equipment to create sound and music in sessions with learners and identified a positive impact on learning. He wanted to take this further with an investment in equipment such as sound and lights. The equipment needed to be portable, quick to set up and easy to maintain.
This video outlines the positive effects the multi-sensory equipment has upon learners.
