Learner Needs

The key area for learning development, and ILT, within the college was to overcome some of the challenges that face our dyslexic students. These learners find it hard to follow traditional academic routes of learning because of their reluctance to engage in activities which put them at a disadvantage. We hope that through the use of this technology that we can go some way to overcoming these fears.

As the resources/technology were delivered part way through the academic year - it was felt that we couldn’t fully implement their use until they had been evaluated properly. A decision was taken to road-test those resources that could easily be used straight out of the box without having to installed additional software. As a result the Digi Memo Handwriting recognition and Audio Notetaker software has yet to be evaluated, but will be implemented next term. The PDA devices and mobile phones (HTC TyTnII) were put straight into action.

It was decided to review these with a select group of students who weren’t afraid of technology but were also reluctant to go and seek face to face academic support for their dyslexia. This proved to be a great success.
